Green IT Services : Catalyst for Cost Optimization

According to a recently released global enterprise survey, India is a world leader in green IT potential. The Indian respondents scored over others in expecting to pay 5% or more for green technology if its benefits for the environment and return on investment (ROI) are proven.

Green technology is technology with efficient power consumption, reusable packaging,  maximize energy efficiency during the product's lifetime, recycling offers for older equipment, use of non-toxic materials, or making investments in future green concepts such as alternative materials.

Modern IT organizations rely upon a complicated mix of people, networks and hardware; as such, a green computing initiative must be systemic in nature, and address increasingly sophisticated problems. Elements of such a solution may comprise items such as end user satisfaction, management restructuring, regulatory compliance, disposal of electronic waste, telecommuting, virtualization of server resources, energy use, thin client solutions, and ROI.

The global effort by IT giants on green IT

HCL Technologies
HCL Technologies, a leading global IT services provider, announced in Unstructure 2008, an annual Global Customer Meet, as carbon neutral event for offsetting its carbon emissions with Carbonfund.org, one of the country’s leading carbon offset organizations. By joining Carbonfund.org’s CarbonFree Partner program, HCL has joined a national movement of businesses and organizations that are leading the fight against global warming.
HCL also announced its Green Datacenter Services featuring a unique Datacenter Green Quotient Assessment Framework. This framework will help enterprise IT organizations reduce their companies' environmental impact through assessing, planning, and implementing green initiatives around their DC environment.
Recently the company has become a member of the US Green Building Council. The company is also the first in India to have a comprehensive environment management program and to be ISO14001 compliant with a comprehensive policy on Waste of Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE). HCL also has a strong eco-system of partners who further enhance its 'green' services, like its VMware Global System Integration partnership with VMware.
HCL pioneered the concept of Remote Infrastructure Management (RIM) with a co-sourcing model of engagement, which has added substantial value to customers including 75+ global enterprises.

IBM Technology Services
As everything becomes more intelligent and interconnected, IBM Technology Services help you to find the value in green. The EPA expects energy costs for data centre environments to double every five years and the energy costs comprising 30-40% of your IT operating budget. So, IBM’s Technology Services forms Global Technology Services (GTS) targeting large corporate customers in India. Also IBM unveiled a $1 bn-a-year service initiative aimed at building and redesigning datacenters that consume less energy in 2007. IBM also offers services to help others to design, build and operate a highly efficient IT infrastructure. IBM has services to create energy efficiency in businesses ranging from large global enterprises to small organizations around the world.

Wipro Technologies

If a person visits Wipro Technologies, Bangalore, he can see a tiny billboard workshop in Bangalore that says: ‘We Use Eco-Friendly Plastics’, which shows Wipro has adopted an approach to green and make quality its USP.
Azim Premji, chairman and CEO, Wipro personally involved in forming a formal charter for ecological sustainability called Ecoeye. It is a collaborative effort between Wipro’s customers, suppliers and employees. Wipro is also working on establishing a supply chain social environmental responsibility guidelines and work with suppliers to identify materials that will reduce the environmental impact of their products. According to the company, all new buildings will meet US Green Building Council Certification norms.

Use of blade servers and virtualized capacity reduces the cooling and power requirements, reducing the number of servers, saves close to 1 million kWh of power. Also with the Live Meeting and Live Communication Server integrated with desktop video phones have helped reduce travel and communication costs and saved about Rs 1 crore with increased productivity.

If green is to be truly sustainable, it’s going to need that kind of environment-changing commitment. Fortunately, that’s also the same kind of long-haul determination that cuts through hype.
