Travelling the Windows Mobile Road ahead

Windows Mobile is a compact operating system, which is based on the Microsoft Win32 API, to suite the basic applications for mobile devices. Devices that run Windows Mobile include Pocket PCs, Smartphones, Portable Media Centers, and on-board computers for certain automobiles.

In April 19, 2000, the first operating system called as the Pocket PC 2000 was released by the company and it has been updated multiple times, with the current version being Windows Mobile 6.1 and a future 6.5 release planned for release toward the end of 2009.

Future versions
    This feature discusses about the upcoming windows mobile software i.e. Windows Mobile 6.5 and Windows Mobile 7.0.

Windows Mobile 6.5
Earlier this year, Microsoft along with key mobile partners, HTC, LG and Orange, had unveiled new Windows phones based on the next generation of operating system i.e. Windows Mobile 6.5. The first devices running the operating system are expected to debut by September '09.

Beside featuring a new user interface and a richer browsing experience, the new phones feature two new services: My Phone, to sync text messages, photos, video, contacts and more to the Web; and Windows Marketplace for Mobile, to provide direct-to-phone mobile applications and can be accessed from both the phone and the Web.

New User Experience
•    Provides a dashboard-like experience to items such as new e-mails, texts, missed calls and calendar appointments
•    includes an improved touch-screen interface
•    and an updated version of the latest Internet Explorer Mobile browser.

According to the latest updates, as much as 10 handsets featuring the 6.5 version have been expected; HTC Touch Diamond 2, HTC Touch Pro 2, LG HQ, LG Eigen and four undisclosed new Acer devices. Also, Toshiba TG01 and Samsung Jack can be included in the list.

Windows Mobile 7
Windows Mobile 7, codenamed "Photon", is a major upgrade planned for release in June 2010, and a beta is planned to be released to testers during November 2009. The updated version was initially intended to be released during 2009, but due to several delays caused Microsoft to release 6.5 instead as a placeholder.

The upcoming Windows Mobile 7 will features a revamped UI, multi-touch and motion-related features. Companies such as MWg and HTC are expected to release Windows Mobile Professional devices supporting this version.

Also, the new operating system features redesigned interface, new Office Mobile version, next Internet Explorer Mobile, accelerometer functionality with interface (motion gestures), new media player version. Windows Mobile 7 will incorporate elements of Windows Mobile 6.5 (Home screen), and Zune.

Further, some features like game mode allows users to control the game in a much easier manner than a standard application including shortcuts for scrolling, task and menu access, press and hold controls, list items, press and drag. Also an intelligent camera with motion sensor, sensitive to light conditions will be there in the new operating system.

Various analysts predict that the upcoming operating system from Microsoft will be the answer to the Palm Pre’s Synergy, which automatically aggregates contact information from all your social networks by making manual updates to your address book obsolete.
