Would Intel rule the roost in mobile space with Moorestown Platform?
Intel Corp, the world’s largest chipmaker, holds more than 80 percent market share of PC processors. The chipzilla has announced the launch of its 32nm Westmere desktop processors. Recently, the company has also launched its new Pine Trail chips especially for netbooks, which is expected to increase by 14 percent to more than $46 billion in 2010 and Intel wants to have a share in it too. Now, with its latest Moorestown Platform, the company wants to excel in mobile market.

At present, PC vendors are moving in opposite direction, using phone chips to impress users of PCs and consumer electronics. Analysts predict that the new paradigm shift in the preferences of the consumers for such processors is emerging as a danger alarm for Intel. Hence, the chip maker is facing competition from mobile devices like phones, tablets, e-readers and scaled-down laptops that are used for accessing internet these days.

Meanwhile, mobile handsets have transformed into smartphones which, according to Google, have now become superphones. Further, large notebooks became small netbooks which are now transforming into smartbooks. To counter Intel-powered PCs, various companies that include Qualcomm, Marvell Technology and Freescale Semiconductor developing new kinds of Internet devices at CES, 2010.

Intel’s Moorestown Platform

In CES, 2010, Intel has introduced its mobile platform, called Intel's Moorestown platform to compete chip vendors in mobile space. The new platform will bring "Intel Inside" from PCs to mobile devices. The company has dominant position in computer processor, but has not had a stake in mobile handsets. In the event, the Chipzila has introduced LG GW990 Smartphone based on the Moorestown Platform.

Moorestown platform is the successor of Intel’s Menlow processor specially designed for mobile Internet devices. The new platform integrates 45nm processor and consists of a system on a chip, called Lincroft and an I/O hub known as Langwell.

Web based mobile to reach billion mark in 2013

It is assumed that in the coming years, people will use multitude of devices for accessing internet. Further, PC will be the chief mode for people to go online, however various portable devices are chopping off PC’s dominance with Smartphones leading the charge. Leading vendors in mobile segment viz. Qualcomm, Freescale, Marvell and Texas are using chip technology developed by ARM Holdings.

According to the research firm, IDC, the number of web based mobile phones will reach 1 billion mark in 2013, but the number of internet connected PCs will rise to 1.6 billion from 754 million in the same time period.

Apple Tablet? : After the launch of Google’s Nexus One, it is reported that Apple will introduce its tablet PC by this month end. It seems that both devices will change the PC industry and pattern of the web based devices like mobile handsets, e-reader, and handheld PCs.

Marvell’s Armada chips: Santa Clara, California-based Marvell had launched its new line of chips called Armada to provide right balance of processing speed, low power consumption and touch screens adaptability, which make easier to convert Smartphones into Mobile internet devices.
