Non-corporate emails sent over BlackBerrys can be intercepted by the Indian government because; Canada based Research In Motion (RIM) may allow to do it. This move is likely to work out the row between the Department of Telecom (DoT) and RIM. This move is taken in keeping in mind government’s security concerns pertaining more to emails from individual users than enterprise customers. This important issue arose due to presence of the data encryption technology used in BlackBerrys. It uses a very high level of encryption — at 256 bits — while sending data. In keeping mind security, the government has decided to intercept and decode the data. BlackBerry works to scramble message before sending and unscrambles at the receiver’s BlackBerry. Hence, the government’s decryption software is capable to decode message encrypted only up to 40 bits. That is why; Indian government wants RIM to either give up decryption keys or decrease encryption from 40 bits. Officials close to the developments reveal, telecom secretary Siddhartha Behura met Canadian High Commissioner David Malone and RIM officials on 7th May. Sources explain “RIM officials were confident that the Indian government can monitor emails to non-business enterprise customers. BlackBerry is available with two types of services; one is for enterprise (corporate) customers and second for individual (non-corporate) users. In India, more than 1,14,000 customers of BlackBerry are from the enterprise segment. Though, decrypting emails of individual customers is a larger safety concern for Indian security agencies. According to RIM spokesperson, “RIM is being operated in more than 135 countries around the globe and accomplished the regulatory requirements of the governments. Pavan Duggal, a Cyber Law expert said that this partial access of government allowed by RIM could bring up probably legal risks for BlackBerry service providers. Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Vodafone, BPL Mobile and many more are main BlackBerry service providers in India. This issue came on light when the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence expressed incapability to interrupt any exchange of messages between hawala dealers and militant groups that use BlackBerry device to commun |
