The latest reports indicate that Dell Inc. is trying to sell computer factories around the world in efforts to cut cost and improve profits.

The familiar sources cited that Dell has approached many contractors recently to sell the plants. Even it is rumored that company has plans to sell its entire computer manufacturing units within the next 18 months.

The buyers for Dell’s factories will be none other than big contract manufacturers; mostly will be from Asian countries as cited by news sources.

Dell was originally not into retailing. It used to manufacture computers for corporate customers on orders. But over the past three years, growth has shifted to laptops that were sold to consumers through retail stores. Round Rock, Texas-based Dell is not in sync with its competitors to build portable PCs.

The sources also share that Dell could face several problems in selling its plants. Many contract manufacturers may be reluctant to buy factories in places with high labor costs.
