Freescale Semiconductor, an entity that was spun off from Motorola Inc in 2004 has announced that it has intentions to let off its cell phone chip business and complete a sale, joint venture or other options in the coming months.
The company when branched in 2004 was taken up by private in a $17.6 billion leveraged buyout in December 2006. At that time, it was expected that it would increase investments in automotive and networking markets. Freescale Semiconductor has also said that phone maker Motorola who is also a customer of former, had agreed to “provide it a certain consideration” in exchange for ending its minimum purchase commitment to Freescale. Still, Freescale will remain a supplier for Motorola. The chip company has announced that it would increase investments in the consumer markets that use its microcontrollers, microprocessors, application-specific processors as well as analog chips and sensor chips.
Among the cellular products, the company has wider solutions including baseband processors, the main chips in a cell phone, as well as radio chips and chips for power management and audio. Renu Singh/ITVoir Network |
