Google has added yet another product to its portfolio by launching Knol, a user generated online encyclopedia.

The product was announced in last December but has been launched now. Knol as was speculated earlier is pegged as stiff competitor for Wikipedia. Based on Wikipedia's pattern it will also target to tap the knowledge of online users on subjects in form of an encyclopedia format.

It will promote users to append their real names at the end of every article, and will be given chance to earn income from their work via Google ads.

Knol as contrary to Wikipedia will have the final word from the authors to the changes or suggestions made by readers. Readers will also be able to rate articles and write reviews of them.

Google has risen to pinnacle and is a tough competitor for large enterprises like Microsoft. In such scenario the product launched could pose threat to Wikipedia’s popularity, as cited by reports.

The Google is gradually expanding its portfolio with higher efficiency grade.
