Intel inks deals with Lenovo, Motorola to design Intel-powered devices
Added On:1/13/2012 9:16:00 AM

World's biggest chipmaker Intel has entered into a multi-year strategic mobile partnerships with Motorola Mobility and Lenovo under which they will build smartphones and tablets for consumers and businesses using Intel chips.

Speaking at the Consumer Electronics Show 2011, Paul Otellini, Chief Executive Officer at Intel said, Lenovo would launch a smartphone for the Chinese market using Intel's newest chip in the second quarter of the year, while Motorola will launch its phone in the second half of 2012.

Sources informed that Intel is betting big on its new "Medfield" chip which is specifically designed to be used in mobile devices. Intel says Medfield position well in benchmark tests against competing chips on the market and it conserves enough power to compete with rival smartphones using ARM Holdings' architecture.

Trusted aides cited, Massachusetts Institute of Technology has already tested prototype smartphones and tablets equipped with Intel's latest Medfield chip.

Analysts added, the latest move by Intel is a part of an effort by the chip giant to build a position in the fast-growing smartphone market, where it has not seen much traction to date.

Seems, coming year will play a crucial role in deciding the fate for the chip maker Intel in mobile device category.
