AMD is set to launch it’s next range of processors codenamed ‘Bobcat’ to counter the threat posed by the arrival of Intel’s Atom processor chips for low cost PCs. Going by the market trend of growing acceptance for low cost ,mobile and less power consuming NoteBooks this move was only expected.
The AMD''s new chip is touted to be a single-core, 64-bit processor designed for low-cost laptops and Small, Cheap Computers. The chip will have a 1GHz clock speed, 128KB of L1 cache, 256KB of L2 cache and an 800MHz Hyper Transport link out to the rest of the system. Its on-board memory controller will handle 400MHz DDR 2 chips.
Also it would be easy on the energy consumption and is expected to consume no more than 8W and will be so small as to accommodate itself in a 812-pin, 27mm² BGA package. Also while 8W consumption is more than the Atom N270''s 2.5W efficiency but AMD is not missing the point that Atom processors have to be accompanied by a big old northbridge that consumes up to 6W.
Thus the chip war between the two companies is not to ease in near future .Also there have been problems with Intel’s Atom chips delivered to the markets as the company has cited limited testing facilities as one of the reasons. Hence companies like Asus producing low cost PCs are still clinging to the old Celeron M chips in some of its Eee PCs while vendors such as HP turned to VIA''s C7-M chip.
This will clearly give AMD some breathing space till November when it launches its own chip. Also Intel has not decided whether Atom processor has to replace its Celeron line or not . Intel insists that Atom is aimed at Small, Cheap Computers which Intel calls "netbooks" and "nettops" while Celerons are meant for low-cost machines.
