Apple pips LG as world's third largest handset maker

According to a recent report, Apple has now become the world’s third-largest phone maker by shipments and market share. It is worth noticing that Apple’s remarkable iPhone 4S has propelled Apple to grab third place in the fourth quarter of 2011, ahead of LG. 

Sources informed that Apple has jumped from its previous fifth spot to eclipse LG in third after generating a overwhelming 128 percent year-on-year growth in the number of iPhones sold. 

It is worth noticing that Apple’s remarkable iPhone 4S has helped Apple to get third place in the fourth quarter of 2011, ahead of LG and ZTE. 

Nokia remains the biggest mobile phone manufacturer, making 27 percent of total cell phones. It has sold 113.5 million phones, although the Finnish firm endured an 8.2 percent slump in sales in Q4. 

Second place went to Korean consumer electronics giant Samsung which is manufacturing 23 percent handsets. It has shipped 97.6 million handsets worldwide in the fourth quarter, up nearly 21 percent year-on-year.
