Intending to make Aakash tablet PC more indigenous and to further lower down its prices, Indian government is mulling to involve three more IITs in the manufacturing of world's cheapest Aakash tablet PC.
At present, the device is available to students at Rs 1,100 after government subsidy.
Trusted aides informed our team, apart from IIT Rajasthan, which is spearheading the project, IIT Mumbai, IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur would also be roped in for the project.
The latest development is followed by a meeting chaired by honorable Minister of Communications and Information Technology Kapil Sibal where senior officials from the Ministry as well as from Department of IT were present.
According to latest report, government is hopeful to bring out an upgraded version of the device, marked as ''Aakash-II'' by April, 2012.
Presently, for numerous hardware components including the processor, Aakash tablet has to rely on import.
It is important to note that Aakash is a feature rich tablet equipped with all requisite attributes of a high-end tablet. The budget tablet is packed with a cellular modem and SIM. Spotted in two versions, the tablet is powered by Android platform, and support Wi-Fi connectivity for internet access and cloud storage. In addition, it supports 256 MB of RAM, a 32 GB expandable memory slot and two USB ports.
Market watchers quote, Indian government has taken the latest move only after differences cropped up between IIT Rajasthan and Datawind, the manufacturer of the tablet, over the issue of improved specification demands.
