Microsoft partners once again with Novell for Linux support.
Added On:8/20/2008

As per the market reports, the tech giant Microsoft Corp will be paying Novell Inc $100 million as a subscription fee for the Novell’s open-source Linux software. While this payment is in addition to $240 million which Microsoft made to Novell in 2006, this payment will be made by the 1st of November.

This contract includes agreements related to technology sharing and partnership in business which will help the corporate sector to make better use of Linux and Windows servers.

Microsoft purchases certificates from Novell and sells subscriptions to Windows clients. These clients need support for their computer systems to make Linux work well. Linux, an open-source software, very distinct from the proprietary software allows developers to share code and add functions. In this way, Linux users will be paying only for the custom features, technical support and maintenance.

Novel, on the other hand has already fetched $ 156 million though the Microsoft certificates in the first one and a half year since Nov. 2006. This was a part of a 5-year contract between Microsoft and Novell. Novell further will be spending an unrevealed sum of money for provision of new tools and training and resources for subscribers.

For along time, both Microsoft and Novell generated enough heat in the open-source community with respect to the clause regarding patent violations.

The above said contract between the two companies is said to expire on January 1, 2012.
