After Google it seems now is the turn for Verizon to back open source platform. The recent information indicates that Verizon Wireless is backing a free operating system to compete with the likes of Microsoft, Google and Qualcomm.
The company is emerging as the first U.S. carrier to join the LiMo Foundation. The LiMo foundation is aimed to unite with handset makers, software companies and carriers on a software platform to create a wide variety of phones.
The foundation has already received support from makers like Motorola, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics. The researchers are looking this platform as the innovation oriented and alternatives for the already existing in the market.
The operating system is speculated to be the cutneck competitor for Android which is mainly backed by Google.
As per the sources company is not adopting LiMo and excluding other operating systems. It will continue to sell the phones with other operating system also.
LiMo is Linux based. The foundation launched the first version of its software package in March, and Motorola, Samsung, LG and Panasonic have showed off phones using it. Motorola already hosts many phones on Linux platform.
While more than 90 percent of PCs run Windows, the market for cell-phone software is much more fragmented. The mobile industry is very reluctant to follow the trend of the PC industry and was not ready to surrender the sole of the device to any single company.
