Intel Corp, the world’s largest chip manufacturer has introduced its next-generation Atom netbook processor, which it claims to bring longer battery life and better performance in low-cost laptops.
According to the company, the new single core chip, called Atom N450 is about 60% smaller than present Atom processors and will require 20% less power. The new chip consumes about 5.5 watts of power.
The company claims that the new platform would permit various PC vendors to design new devices like thinner netbooks and tablets. Based on Atom N450 platform, major vendors will display their netbooks at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show.
The company has not detailed about the pricing for the chip, but indicated that it will be similar to the existing price points.
It is reported that the new platform will run at a clock speed of 1.66GHz, which is similar to the existing Atom N280 netbook chip. However, the new chip will have smaller chip size due to integration of the graphics and memory controller into the CPU.
Besides Atom N450, the company also introduced two Atom processors for low-cost, small form factor desktops viz. the single-core Atom D410 and dual-core D510, which operate at clock speeds of 1.66GHz and include 512KB and 1MB of cache respectively.
